This is a picture of the 46 Semi final team.
The 1946 final was eventually played in Caherciveen Sportsfield on Sunday June 1st 1947. . Rangers with a big advantage in weight and height attacked from the start and the Waterville defence was kept busy. John C. Driscoll (France’s father) RIP missed two early chances of scores and Waterville swept downfield with a neat hand passing movement to score a fine point from Joe Brennan. Rangers levelled matters with a point from a 14 yard free. They kept up the pressure and despite good defensive work by the Lucey brothers, Cronin and B. Keating the ferry boys got through for two goals. The first from a 30 yards kick by John O’ Driscoll and another from a 50 yds kick by Neil O’Shea, a young player of distinct promise.
E. Falvey, the Limerick county player, who was outstanding all through had a grand point from a “fifty” to leave the half time score Ranger 2-2 Waterville 1 pt. On the turnover Waterville, with the sun and the breeze behind them, attacked strongly and Mick. McGillycuddy scored a goal. Encouraged by this the Lakesiders continued to press and the Portmagee defence in which Mike Kennedy and Jackie Falvey were prominent conceded a series of ‘fifties’ to save their lines. From one of these Mick McGillycuddy sent straight over the bar a pt and with only a goal between the teams the play livened up considerably.Entering the last quarter it looked as if the finish would compensate for the first half dullness. But stoppages due to injuries became frequent and with Portmagee defense proving well – nigh impregnable the game ended on a tame note.
Final Scoreline Portmagee Skellig Rangers 2-2 : Waterville 1-2.
